The long-term outcome for our work to grow Wikimedia UK’s profile and capacity is that Wikimedia UK is recognised as a leading organisation for open knowledge.

Over the last year, with more resources and a new Development and Communications team, we have tested new approaches and reached out to audiences to ask what they want to see from Wikimedia UK.

Notable successes include the social media launch of our grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in early 2021; Digital Skills for Heritage received over 25,000 impressions through engagement and retweets on social media. During Women’s History Month in March 2021, we tested a new format of engagement, showcasing women in the Wikimedia community who are striving to close the gender gap on Wikipedia. We celebrated Small Charities Week in June 2021, a first for us, and important in celebrating our impact as a ‘Small But Mighty’ charity. This is a journey we will continue as we build the recognition of Wikimedia UK as a leading open knowledge charity and increase our stature within the UK, the international Wikimedia movement and the global open knowledge movement. It is also vital that we are active and engaging in recruiting and retaining volunteers and donors; working towards a sustainable future for the charity in order to continue to move closer to our vision of a more tolerant, informed and democratic society through open knowledge.
